ASANDA Masuku is fresh from varsity and she believes everything in her name has to be glam and glitter.
This is why when the time came for her to make a choice of her own wheels, she went for the new Beijing X55 SUV, made by Baic.
She told Cartrends she wanted something that will say “Asanda has arrived” and this car does exactly that wherever she goes.
“Whenever I arrive, people stare. They think an older person will step out of it and when they see someone so young, they keep wondering,” she said.
“I think this car chose me more than me choosing it. I was browsing online, looking for a nice but affordable car. I made an enquiry with a dealership in Fourways for another car.”
She said the following day she got a call from her consultant to come and see something new at the dealership.
“When I got there he gave me the keys to try the Beijing. I told him I preferred the other car, but he asked me to drive it around,”
Asanda thought while she loved the car, she would not be able to afford it.
“It was not long we were sitting on the table, discussing my car finance and to my surprise I qualified for the car,” she said.
“Since driving it, I can’t let go of my car. I want to be behind the wheel at all times,” she said.
Responding to the Cartrends questionnaire about her car, this is what she had to say:
Q: When did you buy this car?
A: It’s actually a new baby for me, just a month old.
Q: Was it your first car and is it your dream car?
A: It’s my first car but not my dream car. My biggest dream is to drive a Porsche. It doesn’t matter the model, as long as it is Porsche.
Q: What do you love about this car?
A: It is big, spacious, comfortable and an apple to the eye. I come from a big family that loves church so it accommodates us nicely when we have to attend church gatherings.”
“The car feels and handles very luxurious. You’ll swear you are in an expensive big brand when driving it,” she said.
Q: Does it draw a lot of attention?
A: Too much and I love it. And people love it too. When I drive around my neighbourhood in Dorn Park, Ekurhuleni, I always hear whistle, more especially from the people who know me, those I grew up with, especially those who know my struggles,” she said.
Q: Tell us about its interior?
A: “The Beijing is extremely comfortable. The seat cushion material is beautiful and excellent for long trips. I love the bucket seats,” she said.
She said the back-row of seats is well-designed and properly angled, giving her passengers enough leg-room.
“From inside, this car is so quiet and pleasant. You don’t even hear that it’s idling,” said Asanda.
Q: Tell us about its outward looks?
A:” It’s gorgeous”.
She said the front is sharp, angular and destructively frowning.
“I love the LED headlamps that are a head-turner with a cross-dissolving front bumper grille,” she said.
She said the body is curvy yet smooth, making it stand-out from other cars.
Q: Do you think South African drivers are good?
A: “They are too good for me as a new driver. They are very fast especially here in Joburg. If you are fooled, you might end up rushing like them and end up causing accidents”.
She said this is one reason she decided not to drive her car every day.
“To work, I leave it. I use it on weekends when I drive with my mom. At least with her by my side, I become brave since she has been driving for years,” she said.
Q: Name one thing that SA drivers do that you wish they’d stop doing?
A: “Drinking and driving is a huge turn-off for me. I don’t know what must happen for them to stop that bad habit. I really don’t see the fun in drinking and driving.”
She said motorists must be responsible over the festive season and remember that not everyone on the road is an experienced driver.
“Some drivers expect everyone to be experts on the road, some are new and get scared easily which might lead to bad results,” she said.
