RELEBOHILE Mofokeng, the President of the 2k’s, The last born, Rea Thoma Rea Festa, are all the names given to him because he is loved by many.
The more names you have, the more the love from soccer fans because of your tactics and maneuvers when you get the ball. And the Pirates star rocks the fields, even the kids admire his skills.
It is that love and admiration that saw him drive off in a brand new car on Tuesday, 11 February.
Mofokeng is now the proud owner of a VW Polo Style worth R320 000 which he drove out with at Bidwest McCarthy VW Westgate in Roodepoort.
The Orlando Pirates winger was named the Gauteng Sport Awards Personality of the Year winner by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in November last year.
Joma Sport SA then tagged along to reward him with a car for his achievement.
During the hand over held at VW Westgate, Gauteng MEC for Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Matome Chiloane congratulated Relebohile.
He said Rele, as he is affectionately known, was an inspiration.
He explained that winning this award was not a walk in a park for him.
“He was voted for by the public and he was against other heavy weights,” he said.
Chiloane said Mofokeng was competing against the likes of former African 100m record holder Akani Simbine, UFC champion Dricus Du Plessis, two-time Olympic champion Tatjana Smith and his Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams.
“This is an inclusive process whereby we let the public nominate and vote for the best performing athlete in the province,” said Chiloane.
He said it doesn’t matter where the sportsperson was born but as long as they are registered with the Gauteng Sports Federation, they can be nominated and voted for.
He thanked the sponsors, Joma Sport, for making the moment possible.
Philani Xaba, General Manager at Joma Sport told Cartrends that they have a program where they seek to reach out to communities.
“We identify causes that we can extend a helping hand to and then do our best to help,” he said.
He said it’s not just in sports but everywhere, be it children who are short of uniforms, poor families etc. they assist.
“We mostly work with government structures. We have worked with the KZN Department of sports, Eastern Cape Department of sports and Mpumalanga Department of Sport.”
He added that this is the first time they partnered with the Gauteng Department of sports and that the relationship will continue.
“The Departments usually choose their sportsperson of the year and we will then look at what they award them. That’s where we step in.”
He said rewarding athletes was important to motivate them to do even better which could inspire those that are following to also work hard.
Shy Relebohile thanked the public for nominating and voting for him.
He said he will continue to give his best.
“I love this car,” he told Cartrends.
He said he will park his other car and use this one because it’s portable, and fuel savvy.
“From now on, when I go to gym, I will drive in my new Polo Style,” he said.
The Orlando Pirates winger didn’t waste time.
“He connected Bluetooth and started playing his favourite amapiano songs.
As he drove out of the dealership, his head was moving, dancing to the rhythm.
Sales Executive at VW Westgate, Lesego Nyathi said this is a new upliftment of the Polo Vivo.
“It’s a Polo Vivo Style and it has got everything you need in a car. It has got your apple and android play, cruise control, lane assist etc. Some of these feature are coming in for the first time in a Vivo.”
She said it is priced at R320 000.
