AS of today, 05 March, petrol and diesel prices have dropped.
Petrol prices decreased by 7 cents per litre while diesel went down by up to 23.5 cents per litre.
Motorists told Cartrends that this was great news.
“At least, I will save a few hundreds,” said Nqubeko Shabalala.
She said since the beginning of the year, when fuel prices were sharply increasing, she had been pouring fuel of up to R1200 a week.
“That’s around R4800 a month which was too much for me.”
She said today (Wednesday) she poured a full tank and it cost her R1000 and a couple of cents.
“I saved close to R200. This means this month I could save around R800. I could do a lot with that money.”
Motorists said they hoped next month, the prices can drop again to further the relief.
“Fuel prices have been increasing for the past four months. Hopefully they can decrease for two to four times as well,” said Sandile Nzama.
He said he drives an uber and when fuel prices increase, he makes little profit.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy recently announced the changes.
It said both grades of petrol drop by 7 cents per litre, while diesel decrease by 17.5 cents per litre for 0.05% sulphur and 23.5 cents per litre for 0.005% sulphur.
The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin go down by 6 cents per litre, and the maximum retail price of liquefied petroleum (LP) gas decline by 2 cents per kilogram.
The department attributed the reductions to lower global oil prices and a stronger rand, which contributed to a decrease by about 13c on petrol and 14c on both diesel and LP.
The slate levy remains unchanged at zero cents per litre in the price structures of petrol and diesel.
