VOLKSWAGEN fans already have a wide range of models to choose from — including the Polo, Golf, T-Roc, T-Cross, Tiago, Tiguan, and Amarok. Now, there’s a fresh name to add to the list, the Volkswagen Tengo.
Volkswagen Group Africa recently announced that this new compact SUV will be locally produced at its Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape.
Production preparations are already underway, with the new model set to join the assembly lines alongside the Polo and Polo Vivo.
The reveal came via Volkswagen’s official social media channels. The company first engaged the public with a naming poll, inviting South Africans to vote on a local badge for what had been internally referred to as the “A0 Entry SUV” — a model known in Brazil as the Tera.
The name “Tengo” emerged as the winner, beating out alternatives such as Tavi, Tiva, and Tion.
According to Volkswagen, the name “Tengo” holds rich cultural significance in African languages, representing qualities like strength, resilience, and purpose.
While the design and development of the model were spearheaded by VW Brazil, production there is already underway at the company’s Taubaté plant.
The Tera was officially unveiled in March 2025, with the model hitting the Brazilian market in June 2025.
In Brazil, the Tera is offered with either a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine or a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
South African customers can expect the Tengo to arrive in 2027, once local production is up and running.
With its smart looks, practical size, and meaningful name, the Tengo is poised to become a compelling option in Volkswagen’s SUV family.
