CHERY has turned up the heat once again—this time in the bakkie segment.
Unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, the Chinese automaker confirmed the arrival of a brand-new bakkie called the Himla.
And here’s the exciting part: it’s officially headed to South Africa.
The Himla will be offered in two variants—a turbodiesel and a turbodiesel hybrid—marking another step forward in Chery’s drive toward performance and innovation.
While technical details remain under wraps, Chery did reveal that this project has been in the works for quite some time.
The name Himla is an acronym for High performance, Innovation, Multifunctional, Longevity, and All-terrain, and is inspired by the Himalayas, the iconic mountain range spanning the border of India and Tibet. It’s a bold name, hinting at serious ruggedness and capability.
According to the Chinese automaker we can expect the Himla either later this year or in early 2026—so it’s not too far off.

At the Shanghai Auto Show, the display model sported chunky tyres wrapped around 19-inch alloy wheels, further reinforcing its tough, go-anywhere persona.
The interior, as expected, features a centrally mounted infotainment screen, indicating a modern and tech-forward cabin.
While we’re still waiting on key specs like power and torque figures, there’s plenty of reason to be excited. With Chery’s recent momentum in the South African market, the Himla could be another game-changer.
