THEY say Christmas doesn’t come twice in one year, but for petrol users in South Africa, it seems the festive season has arrived not just twice, but four times.
The latest data from the Central Energy Fund suggests that motorists can expect another drop in fuel prices next week—marking the fourth consecutive decrease since the start of 2025.
If current market conditions hold, though this remains uncertain given the fluctuating rand/dollar exchange rate and volatile oil prices, petrol users could see a decrease of 20 cents per litre for both 93 and 95 octane grades.
Diesel users may benefit even more, with a possible 51 cents per litre drop, while the price of illuminating paraffin is expected to fall by 55 cents.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will confirm the final price changes in early June, with the new prices taking effect from midnight on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
Motorists have welcomed the news with enthusiasm.
“Petrol has been killing us, especially last year. Having a decrease four times in a row is like Christmas four times in one year,” said Mondli Dlangalala, who drives a BMW 3 Series. “Because it’s a sport model, I have to top up a bit more when I really want to enjoy the drive. With this decrease, I can now enjoy my car without breaking the bank.”
Another motorist, Nonhle Buthelezi, shared how the decrease will impact her daily routine. “I take my kids to school every day. With this fourth drop, I’ll get some much-needed relief.”
While the outlook remains cautiously optimistic, for now, South African motorists have every reason to celebrate.
