ABOUT 70 pupils from Gegede Primary School in KwaZulu Natal, are walking with pride to school, thanks to the Nguni-Off-Road.
The Nguni-Off-Road, which started as a motor sport and later registered as an NPO, donated shoes to the needy pupils last week.
One pupil who spoke to Cartrends said that this is the best gift ever for her.
“I live with my grandmother and she can’t afford to get everything for me and my siblings,” said a 10 year old pupil who cannot be named to protect her identity.
She said when the year began, her shoes were torn and her grandmother couldn’t afford to buy her new ones.
“I was embarrassed walking to school with torn shoes. I was so happy when the Nguni-Off-Road gave me a new pair,” she said.
She said now that she’s got new shoes, she walks with pride to school.
Nguni-Off-Road Deputy Chairperson, Lucky Mbuyazi told Cartrends that it gives them pleasure as Nguni-Off-Roaders when they do something that changes people’s lives.
He said they donated to Gegede primary school because it’s situated in the area they normally use for their off-roading activities.
“KwaMthethwa is in the rural area of KZN and it’s our hotspot. From time to time we drive around here especially after heavy rains because the area is muddy. People in the area always see us driving by and they’ve shown so much love for us.”
He said they wanted to do something good for the community.
“If you want to change the community, you must uplift the youth because they are the future of that community.”
He said they wish they could do more.
The NPO doesn’t have a sponsor yet, but they have already helped many schools with uniforms for pupils among other things.
The club members usually dig into their pockets to support a cause.
The off-roading concept started during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was something for the guys to distress.
As they do their off-roading, they would post videos of their bakkies either swimming in mud, climbing mountains or drag pulling another for a power test.
People loved what they were seeing and many, from different provinces, came with their bakkies to join the club.
As they grew, they started taking turns in different provinces, trying to bring the off-roading near to their members.
That’s when they realized how difficult life was in the areas (mainly rural) they drive-by. They decided to do something about it.
Their next event to look out for will be on the 29th of March in Richards Bay, KZN followed by another in Benoni, Johannesburg on the 5th of April.
